Street Portraits
These paintings, or street portraits, show Darren Cairney's interest in capturing candid moments of people in his vicinity. Evidenced throughout Cairney’s portrait paintings are attempts to transplant his subjects into arbitrary and ambiguated locations, illuminating realistic representations of life captured within a moment of time rather than the specific place.

Places
Juxtaposed against these lively portraits are Darren’s larger works of urban and suburban landscapes devoid of people and activity. Through these paintings he hopes to explore the feeling of being an outsider and the brevity of liminal landscapes.

Mixed Media
Also here are the mixed media work, using pen, ink and acrylics, Darren takes the famous landmarks of Newcastle and the North East of England and captures them from a different angle in order to see them afresh.

"My work is a reflection of how I see the familiar places, where we live, work and visit. I particularly enjoy capturing, in paint, glimpses of the urban and suburban landscape and the people who inhabit that space."
